Trevor Griffiths è nato a Manchester nel 1935. Ha frequentato il St Bede’s College e la Manchester University, e ha lavorato come insegnante e come giornalista politico. A partire dal1971 si è dedicato esclusivamente alla scrittura.Ha scritto e scrive per il teatro, la televisione, la radio e il cinema ed è spesso stato anche il regista delle sue opere.
La sua commedia più conosciuta, Comedians, ha debuttato a Londra nel 1975 e prodotta con grande successo anche a Broadway continua ad essere presentata in tutto il mondo con inalterabile successo. Il testo della commedia è stato pubblicato in Inghilterra nel 1976 ed è diventato un testo molto popolare per l’esame di maturità inglese.A quel punto, la reputazione di Griffiths era tale che Warren Beatty gli chiese di scrivere la sceneggiatura per il suo progetto sul rivoluzionario americano John Reed. Il risultato fu il film vincitore dell’Oscar 1981 Reds.
